The Tomson residence is a sprawling 4000 sq ft residential project that was approached with a contemporary style of design owing to the client’s preference for unconventional volumes, large and abundant windows, curved lines & assymetry. A complementary color scheme based on two shades, blue and white, was largely used across the house. Blue is associated with open spaces, and so it enhances the spaciousness of rooms. The colours which are quite placid exude liveliness and only neutral shades were incorporated so as to maintain the tranquil atmosphere created by the interplay of blue and white. Windows, and other detailings were finished from teak wood. This allowed the introduction of natural elements into a modern layout which fit well into the space, adding a raw flair. Bigger windows, especially full-length windows with sills that are wider in both breadth and width, are a recognisable architectural feature of Tomson residence. They were imposingly large with opulent glazings, which improved airflow and ventilation while also giving the space a rich aesthetic. There was plenty of scope for sunlight and daylight to enter the rooms. Mr. Tomson deeply valued energy conservation, and his house is a testament to that societal commitment. There was a requirement to manipulate an existing plan, to create a more spacious-seeming interior. Using only varying gradients of white, and sticking to the same dual-color scheme establishes uniformity throughout the house. The consistency was maintained not only in the color theme, but in the personality of the entire house. Although different parts had its own distinct quality, they ultimately conveyed that they were part of one large unit. The Living area was consciously designed to exclude entertainment such as Television which hampered interpersonal communication. By placing the TV in the dining space, we have attempted to make a formal, and communicative space for people. The walls of living area are also adorned with mirrors. This is an an interior element that complements the full length windows and glazing, enhancing the luxe ambience. This project’s unconventionality is emphasized by the use of a range of textures, particularly on the walls. Satin matte tiles were chosen due of their sophisticated appearance and smooth, undefined setting, in addition to their clean and transparent characteristic.
